Throwback Thursss…Tuesday. This incredible project titled “Gone But Not Forgotten” by Damien Hirst features an incredible, gilded, Wolly Mammoth. This magnificent piece of art, history, and science is enclosed in a blend of glass and gold framing, protecting it from the elements and creating a spectacular attraction.
The glass “science” is also interesting. The temperature-controlled enclosure meant that traditionally IGUs were used to further balance the interior/exterior temperatures. Pilkington Architectural Glass OptiWhite low iron glass and Eastman PVB were used to guarantee superior optical quality and colour neutrality, an important consideration when facing an all-gold, 12’ statue.
As if the mammoth didn’t weigh enough, the glass assemblies totalled roughly 21,000 lbs.!
