Montana Star Residence

In the mountains of Montana with the famous Big Sky ski resort in the distance rests a lofty, elegant, and majestic custom residence designed by JLF & Associates (Bozeman & Jackson MT).  This home, created to capture the views of the surrounding countryside, incorporates rustic staked stone against modern steel blended into a contemporary living space.  The 20′ tall great room and atrium stairway are unique and defining elements of the home, embraced by an incredible glazing package that allows for breathtaking views.

More Than Meets The Eye.

In order to create these views, a fantastic arrangement of retail (60"-96") and punch (<60") size glass was used throughout the residence in a stunning curtain wall assembly, as well as operational and fixed, thermally broken glazing solutions. Using Optimum Windows frames, Montana Sash and Door assembled sophisticated AGNORA glass into the final system.

Being a high-efficiency (EnergyStar) home required the use of triple-glazed insulated glass units, combining beautifully colour-neutral solar control and passive low-e to further enhance the thermal performance. The IGU makeup consisted of:

• 6mm Saint-Gobain Xtreme Cool-lite 70/33 on Diamant
• 10mm warm edge spacer and argon
• 6mm Saint-Gobain Planitherm XNII on PlaniClear
• 10mm warm edge spacer and argon
• 5mm Clear

All of the lites were tempered for optimal strength. This configuration produced a centre of glass SHGC of 0.27, U-Value of 0.81(W/m²•K), and visual light transmittance of 64%. This blend of coatings and glass provides a comfortable environment in the summer, an aggressive U-Value in the winter, and a pleasant level of daylighting (it sounds better used here!) for the massive window area.

All in all 60 superb IGUs were created to compliment the facade of this stunning Mountain home.
