Climate Pledge Arena

Home of the Seattle Kraken, this multi-purpose arena was originally built in 1962 for the World’s Fair and later converted to an entertainment space.  Starting in 2018, the arena underwent a 1.15B redevelopment to see the overall facility modernized and useful for NHL, NBA, and concerts.  The overall capacity was also increased to roughly 18,300.

Oversized Windows to Light the Space

The iconic landmark needed reimaging, and saw Populous Architects take on the renewal, expertly crafting a unique visitor experience and re-using the 44M pound roof.  Notably, the architects utilized a glass curtainwall design, making the CPA the first in North America to have a 360 degree view in which you could look in or out of the building at any point.

On Time Delivery

Mortenson and Mission Glass were responsible for the custom glass elements of the arena, reaching out to AGNORA to produce the oversized / jumbo IGU’s used through the massive perimeter. Approximately 185 insulated glass units (IGUs) were constructed in varying sizes and shapes to accommodate the roof and undulating design.   Reaching up to 81” x 256+” in size and weighing up to 1700 lbs for each IGU required expert logistic management and installation prowess.  AGNORA and Mission Glass staged the releases to ensure that all products were delivered and sequenced in an efficient [way] to more rapidly install the IGU’s.

The BIG Glass Window Makeup

In order to manage the amount of daylighting in the facility, and improve the overall envelope efficiency, the IGU makeup was:

  • 10mm Tempered Saint-Gobain Cool-lite SKN 076 II on Diamant (low iron) (outboard)
  • 12mm Tempered Clear (inboard)

The makeup resulted in:

  • 69% VLt
  • 0.33 SHGC
  • 1.368 W/m2K Winter U-Value

“This is one of those projects that prove jumbo or oversized glass is an upward trend.  AGNORA wasn’t originally specified in the job, but we were the only ones who could safely and effectively meet the design parameters,” notes Kevin Nash, Senior Project Manager at AGNORA.

On-Time Local Glass Delivery

Beyond the oversized nature of the IGUs, AGNORA is a local fabrication partner stocking a range of glass types and sizes.  Thus, fast delivery (less than 8 weeks on each release) and remakes due to breakage either at site or in the future was a paramount consideration, and AGNORA has all the value as a local partner to fulfill and provide future support for the project when the need arises.
